Bill Moyes - the father of hang-gliding Australian Bill Moyes was thirty-four when he took up hang-gliding, an outdoor sport involving a pilot flying a light aircraft without a motor. 8.1 But for Bill, age was not going to stop him. He took to the skies and loved every moment. In 1967, he became the first man to fly at 350 metres above the ground. 8.2 Later, in 1970, he started using airplanes to pull his hang-glider through the sky. This new technique helped him set his second world record, flying at 2,866 metres! Bill had never expected when he first flew off the mountains that it would become a sport. Soon his friends started asking him if he would build them a hang-glider. He called it Xtralite to reflect the light weight of the hang-gliders. 8.3 When Bill later became a father, he passed on his greatest passion to his son, Steve. From the start, it was clear he was a natural. 8.4 There was even a film made of the father and son. It was entitled The Birdmen of Kilimanjaro and it shows the pair climbing up to the top of the mountain and flying off in hang-gliders. In an interview years later, Bill said he had been very lucky in his life. He said he had seen views many people could only dream of seeing. A So, in 1974 he set up his very own company. B Some may say he was too old to begin doing an extreme sport. C Bill did not like hang-gliding at first because he did lots of other sports. D This was his first world record. E Moyes Junior became the world champion when he was just eighteen.
