Solutions to health problems sometimes come from unusual places. For example, Deborah Kogan's friends helped her on a social networking site. Her son Leo had a rash. His doctor treated him for an infection but the boy's condition got worse. Meanwhile, Deborah posted pictures of her sick son on Facebook. 3... Her son had had the same rash and was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease, a serious childhood disease which can cause heart problems. She called Deborah and told her to take Leo to hospital. Thanks to a Facebook photo Leo got the right treatment and felt better.
While some people rely on the internet for help, others have moe confidence in medical dramas on TV. American teenager Alexandria Ostrem believes that a fictional TV doctor saved her life. When her problems with walking started she remembered an episode of her favourite programme House, in which the patient suffered from the same symptoms. Alexandria suspected Guillain-Barre syndrome, an autoimmune disease which often leads to death. 4... When she became paralyzed the doctors did more tests and decided to treat her for Guillain-Barre syndrome. Her self-diagnosis was correct!
Information on the television and online can be useful. But remember: Dr Google can't replace years of professional training. If you are feeling unwell, you should talk to a doctor.
