Over the past few years television presenter & farmer, Jimmy Doherty has carried out a lot of research into the foods that we eat, filming several documentary series about it. One series was about free-range pig farming where he trained people to rear pigs. Another was about the world’s healthiest diets, followed by a series about how everyday foods are produced in factories. In the series titled Jimmy’s Food Factory he went about trying to re-create supermarket foods on his own farm in Suffolk, without the use of any special equipment or machinery like that used in mass production food factories. During this series, Jimmy re-produced cola, prawn crackers, marshmallows, chewing gum and various other popular foodstuffs. Ratings for the show were high as viewers were intrigued by how some of these products were made, and even more so by some of the ingredients that are included in their favourite foods. Jimmy revealed some of the ingredients that have been kept a secret for years. Jimmy exposed the methods used to make the products and then allowed members of the public to try the finished products. Not all of his efforts were successful however, and sometimes his finished products were inedible.
