‘Ouch!’ Caroline scratched the back of her thigh as we were walking along a forest path. ‘What’s the matter?’ I asked. ‘It’s OK. I guess a bug has just bitten me’, she said, and kept walking. But a few moments later, she stopped. ‘I can’t breathe’, she whispered. (1) ___ I looked at her leg, which was awfully swollen now. Something was terribly wrong with her. I tried to think qi uickly. I’d left my mobile in the car as the battery was flat, anyway. Taking Caroline back to the car was out of the question. (2) k___ Then I heard the sound of a car passing nearby. ‘There’s a road near here!’ I thoght. Caroline was really unwell. I had to put her arm around my neck and we started walking very slowly. When we reached the road, I carefully put her on the ground, with her back against a road (3) ___ I pointed at Caroline, sitting at the side of the road. ‘Please, get us to the hospital!’ I shouted.
A It stopped and the driver got out.
B My first thought was to walk back to the car.
C She could hardly stand on her feet and looked very pale.
