An amazing tree
We can see large numbers
of trees in forests and in the
country. These are easy places
for trees to live. But some trees
live in very difficult places.
There is one tree that can even live in deserts: people call
it the 'umbrella thorn' because it looks like an umbrella
and has got lots of thorns. It can live in places where the
temperature goes down to freezing or up to 50 degrees
Celsius, and in places with almost no rain or heavy rain.
This tree is very important for people and animals. Giraffes
eat the leaves of the umbrella thorn, and people give the
flowers, seeds and leaves of it to their cows. People use
the wood for furniture, make medicine from the roots,
seeds and leaves, and string from the bark.
Each tree produces thousands of seeds every year. These
seeds grow into new trees, even in the desert. Because of
this, umbrella thorns can protect the local environment,
People put small umbrella thorns in the desert, and after
a few years, there are lots of umbrella thorns, large and
small, and other types of plant, too. Soon, people can live
in this part of the desert with their animals. People say that
umbrella thorns turn the deserts green.
