Successful diet = no diet at all
As the worldwide obsession with looking slim is on the increase, new diets appear on the market nearly every month. Hardly any of them has anything to do with real science – usually they are invented by ‘wannabe’ researchers, over-ambitious fitness specialists or poorly-educated celebrities. Although most of such diets set rather ridiculous requirements, they are often followed with almost religious dedication. It is surprising how many bright women believe that eating only cabbage, or only eggs, or not eating at all for a week will give them better-looking and healthier bodies. Among all the marketing pulp, very few people seem to remember the simple facts about human health. One of them is Kevin Marcy, the owner of Marcy’s Gym in San Francisco, California, and a former army sergeant, known for his no-nonsense approach to a healthy lifestyle. ‘In my professional opinion, you can eat whatever you want as long as it isn’t junk food or some cheap artificial stuff sold in supermarkets. Even sweets are fine if they are quality products like good chocolate or home-made cake. People get fat for two reasons: lack of self-control and laziness. First, eat whatever you fancy, but in moderation! Learn how to say ‘no’ to that extra slice of cake, learn to say ‘no’ to fries or fizzy drinks that are nothing but chemical compounds. Secondly, you don’t need a diet if you exercise hard every day. Train until you sweat every single day of your life and you will look and feel great. It’s the easiest thing in the world, isn’t it? And yet the most difficult thing because working out is an active thing while going on a diet is essentially a very passive thing. And most people are lazy bones with no motivation but lots of vanity.’
