Los indígenas awá prefieren no dormir en la selva, lejos de sus casas. Una leyenda narra que en el bosque habita un ser sobrenatural que se alimenta de seres humanos. Esta historia popular, denominada Los hermanos cazadores y el tío grande, es una de las que más impresiona a Silvio Cantincus. Recuerda que su abuelo paterno Juan relataba este mito, subiendo y bajando la voz, junto a la cocina de leña, que alumbraba las noches oscuras. Esa por ello que este profesor, de 31 años de edad, se dedicó a recopilar estas leyendas de los awá. Este pueblo posee un territorio comunitario que se extiende en las provincias de Imbabura, Carchi, Esmeraldas y Sucumbíos, en la frontera con Colombia. Su población está compuesta por 5 388 personas. En la comunidad El Baboso, en Carchi, Cantincus ha recolectado unas 30 de estas historias fantásticas, que giran entre el mito y la realidad. Su proyecto es recolectar las historias de su parcialidad. Y, en el futuro, de ser posible poderlas publicar. También comenta que otros relatos se conservan en los 27 centros poblados, que conforman la Federación de Pueblos Awá del Ecuador. Al igual que lo hacía Milton Cantincus, papá de Silvio, los padres de familia acostumbran a narrar las fábulas en la noche junto al fogón, a la hora de la comida. En este espacio también comparten los secretos de la caza, pesca y otras actividades productivas. Las viviendas, incluso, tienen un espacio para la reunión familiar nocturna. La mayoría de historias tienen como escenario la naturaleza y los seres que viven en ella, explica el educador. Se trata de cuentos como El rezo que salvó a una mujer, El cazador y los cuatro perros, La Vieja, El cueche, El cazador de dantas, La mujer awá que fue llevada por el diablo, El tigre de agua que crió a dos niños, Barbacoas tierra de tigres, El pez mero, El negro del monte y La mujer trampera. Este último relato describe a una dama ambiciosa que cazó a más animales de los que necesitaba para alimentar a su familia. Es por ello que la madre naturaleza la atrapó en el monte y nunca más le permitió retornar a su hogar. En la cosmovisión awá cada uno de los animales de la montaña tiene dueño. Por eso, explotar los recursos en exceso trae consecuencias. En el caso de las narraciones, esa práctica termina con el castigo. “Cada historia tiene una enseñanza. Cuando irrespetamos a la naturaleza, esta nos juzga. Pero cuando la veneramos, ese mismo espacio, que tiene espíritu, nos protege”. Esta tradición oral también se recopila en Colombia, donde se encuentran otros descendientes de esta nacionalidad milenaria.
