1. Wenger - My first impression of Fabregas

It was the perceptive passing of Cesc Fabregas that first caught Arsène Wenger's eye.

Back in 2003, the Arsenal manager travelled to Finland for the Under-17s World Cup in order to run the rule over, among others, a blossoming young midfielder in the Spanish team.

Fabregas had Barcelona in his blood and was rising rapidly through the ranks at the Nou Camp alongside the likes of Lionel Messi and Gerard Pique.

Spain did not lift the trophy that year but Fabregas came home with the individual honours. He won the Golden Boot as top scorer and was voted Player of the Tournament for his overall contribution.

Twelve days after losing to Brazil in the Final, the 16-year-old signed for Arsenal.

Ahead of Barcelona's visit to Emirates Stadium for the Champions League Quarter-Final first leg, Wenger recalled that first impression.

"I couldn't go to watch a youth team game at Barcelona because they would not have welcomed me," he said before the weekend trip to Birmingham. "So I could only watch him in the Under-17 national team.

"You could see straight away that his vision of the game was exceptional. He was physically a little bit weak at the time but he could score goals.

"I do not know if there were other teams [in for him]. We were just first and players want to join us because they feel they have a chance [to play]. Many young players want to join us because of that."

2. Wenger - Why French football is on the up
Arsène Wenger believes French club football is undergoing a revival.

The French Ligue 1 title race is one of the tightest in Europe with just three points separating the top six. Seventh-placed Stade Rennes will also claim to be in the hunt.

Lyon and Bordeaux, two of the sides involved in the French title race, are set to meet in the Champions League Quarter-Final on Tuesday night. The competition’s first meeting of two French teams ensures that at least one Ligue 1 club will be among the last four in Europe's premier club competition.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's 1-1 draw at Birmingham, Wenger asserted his belief that French clubs are enjoying a revival and explained why he thinks that has been the case.

"They are going upwards," he said, "They have not completely yet joined England in my opinion, or Spain. But they are on their way up and the league is better than it was three years ago.

"They have injected a lot of money. The TV money has gone up a lot in the last three years and they have some tax advantages that they have created for football. That allows them to pay much more money and they get better foreign players."

Quite often there will be plenty of possession from Arsenal, but that hasn't always resulted in three points when we've played against the likes of United and Chelsea, who are quite content to let us have the ball for the majority of the match. Bergkamp says that the team need to develop a 'ruthless streak', akin to the famous 'Invincibles', and perfect that final ball in the opponent's third of the pitch. Dubbed 'God', or the Iceman during his time at Arsenal, Bergkamp said: "I've been watching Arsenal this season and the football is fantastic. They can cut through defences no problem, so I can't agree with people who say 'this is not the way to win. "They just need to be able to finish it off. You have to shoot, to want to score goals no matter how. Just score, you can't be afraid to miss. "Arsenal always have more possession of the ball than the opponent. You don't see often a bad pass in the midfield. But in the final third, often it's a bad decision. That's so strange," added the Dutchman who won three league titles and four FA Cups in his 11 years with the Gunners, before retiring after the Champions League final defeat to Barcelona in 2006. "In my day, we knew that with our style we could hurt teams and win trophies too. But we did it our way, with the positional game, passing, movement. "Arsène Wenger's idea is not only to play good football. It's to play good football to win."
