Last weekend I saw “Arbitrage,” a film directed by Nicholas Jarecki.  (Jarecki’s father was born in Szczecin in 1933.) This is a drama about Robert Miller, a very rich American financier, played by Richard Gere. After losing a lot of money in a bad investment and he tries to cover it up because he doesn’t want to be arrested for fraud.  His daughter and business associate, Brit Marling, discovers this and needs to decide what to do about it. At the same time, Miller is cheating on his wife, played by Susan Sarandon. One day while driving, he kills his girlfriend and then he tries to cover it up. He is saved by a loyal friend, played by Nate Parker. The movie is about the police investigating the accident and about Miller trying to avoid prison for the murder and fraud.

My favorite scene from the movie is when Miller is celebrating his 60th birthday with his family. He looks like a loving family man: a husband, father, grandfather. Then he says he has to return to the office but goes to see his girlfriend. This is the first time the audience sees one of his many lies.

I highly recommend this movie to anyone who likes complex, not black and white, stories about real life.
