The Hebrides are a remote group of islands to the north-west of Scotland. The weather there can be wild and windy, and in the winter it is sometimes difficult to scross the stormy awters between the islands and Scotlands. This means that people on the islands were sometimes isolated in the past. These days there are ferries and planes to the islands of Tirre. It's one of the nearest islands, but there is only one ferry a day, and it was a long, four-hour journey. Tirre is quiet and beutifule. There aren't many cars on the islands, and when I visited the primary school the children were having a special lesson to teach them about traffic. this is important for the childern if they go to the mainland. At the secondary school there were only forty-two students. On the smaller islands of the Hebrides there aren't any schools, so to children must go to school by ferry. Sometimes, if the weather's really bad, they can't go home. I stayed in Tiree's one town, Scarnish. There aren't eny shooping centries or cinemas here, but a mobile cinema spmetimes comes from the mainland. At the youth club, teenagers were playing tradional music. Some of theme were spaking Gaelic, which most people in Britain can't understand. the community is traditional, but it is also very active and alive. Tiree is a great place for sport. There's a windsurfing championship every year in October.
