Computer- a modern invention?

With new hardware and software appearing all the time, the computer always seems the most modern invention. In fact, i's pretty old. The PC form is from the 1970s, the mouse is almost fifty and the hard disk drive is over fifty. And all these are only improvements, they aren't necessary for a computer to be a computer.

First of all, the computer is a machine that makes calculations automatically. All data(emails, photos and games) are just numbers. Early counting machines were constructed by great mathematicians (Pascal, Leibniz), but the first automatic calculator was built by Wilhelm Schickard in 1623. It resembled a clock and was made of similar elements- it didn't use electricity.

But probably it isn't the oldest computer. One good candidate for this title is the Antikythera mechanism, fragments of which were found on an ancient Greek shipwreck. After long studies scientists cocluded it served to calculate the positions of the sun, moon and planets. Still, one day an older device may be discovered.
