You can visit both these houses today. B Charles Dickens’ birthplace Charles Dickens is famous for his stories about Victorian London, but he was born on the south coast of England in 1812. You can visit the small terraced house where he lived in the town of Portsmouth today. It has a little front garden and shutters on its windows. If you could go back in time, you would see the same furniture in the dining room that you can see now. Unfortunately, Dickens’ father didn’t stay in Portsmouth. He moved to London and lost all his money. Dickens had to leave school and work in the terrible factories that he later wrote about in his books. C Handel and Hendrix’s house 23–25 Brook Street, London, is the address of two terraced houses above a shop. They are unusual because they were the homes of two very different musicians in different centuries. In 1723, the German musician George Handel lived at number 25. The house was near the theatres and concert halls where he worked. It was a tall house, full of Handel’s possessions, including his musical instruments and his paintings. The house has been renovated since this time, but you can still visit it today. 23 Brook Street is the much smaller flat where famous rock guitar player Jimi Hendrix lived in the 1960s. It is less impressive than Handel’s house, but it still has his big double bed and colourful cushions and curtains. D John Lennon’s house John Lennon was a singer in one of the most famous bands in the world, the Beatles. You can visit the house where he lived in the north of England with his aunt from the age of five until he was twenty-three. It is a semi-detached house with a small porch and garden. John’s wife, Yoko Ono, gave the house to the National Trust in 2002 and it is now open to the public. You can even see John’s bedroom, where the Beatles wrote their first famous song. It has not changed at all. If John were alive today, he would be amazed to see how popular his old house has become. If you visit this place, you will learn how a musician lived in the 18th century. see where a writer lived before his life became very difficult. compare a writer’s earlier life with his later life. see a room where a famous song was written. see a pop singer’s home when he was young.
