1. When tourists come to London, they usually visit Oxford Street, the most famous shopping street in the capital. But a few blocks away in Soho is another famous street – Carnaby Street – with interesting shops and an interesting history too.
2.Before 1600, it was an area of open fields where the king and his friends enjoyed hunting. The name Soho comes from those days, when 'Soho!' was a hunting cry. Maps from the 17th century show a few houses in the area. One of them, Karnaby House, gave Carnaby Street its name.
3. In the 1960s, Carnaby Street was the most fashionable place in London. It all started when a brilliant young fashion designer called John Stephen moved to London from Scotland and opened a shop called 'His Clothes'. It was a great success, and soon Stephen had fifteen different clothes shops on the same street! Pop stars like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones bought their clothes in Carnaby Street.
4.However, by the end of the 1970s, Carnaby Street was losing its magic. Fashions changed, punk rock appeared, and people went to other places to find the latest styles. Carnaby Street is still an interesting place to visit, but back in the 1960s, it felt like the centre of the world.
