We are the championsThis week in our We are the champions section we interview Louis Thrumble, a junior chess champion.How long have you played chess?I've known how to move the pieces since I was three years old, but I was five before I really understood how to play and win. When I was six, I played in my first competition. I was really nervous. Since then I've played in lots of competitions and I've won 25 trophies.And how often do you practise?I practise for one or two hours a week, mostly with my dad. He's always beaten me until recently, but now I'm starting to beat him. I sometimes play friendly matches with my younger brother. He's eight, but he's very good. I also play with friends at the chess club at school.Who is the best player you're ever played against?Oncer i played against Jonathan Rowson, who is the adult British champion. The best junior I have played against is Raffe Martyn, who is nineteen and really good.What is the furthest distance you have ever travelled to play in chess competition?Last year I travelled to Dublin and to Edinburgh, and right now I'm practising for this year's junior school championship, which will be in London.If you're interested in finding out more about the game of chess championship, check out the British Chess Federation website.
