Dear Aunt Jean,
I ¹am just writing to tell you how much I ²appreciate the money you have sent me, and to tell you how I ³am getting on in my first term at university. In fact, I ⁴am really enjoying myself. I ⁵am studying quite hard as well, but at the moment I ⁶am spending a lot of time making new friends. I ⁷am still staying with my friend Jill and I ⁸am looking for some place to live on my own. Only a small number of first-year students ⁹live in college here and I ¹⁰seem to be spending a lot of time travelling. I ¹¹go to lectures every morning, and most afternoons I ¹²study in the library. In fact, I ¹³am writing this letter right now instead of an essay on Hamlet. I ¹⁴think I’ll buy some new clothes with the money you’ve sent me. Everything ¹⁵costs a lot here, and I ¹⁶am saving to buy a coat for the winter months. It ¹⁷gets really cold here in the evenings. I now ¹⁸know some other students and generally speaking we ¹⁹are having quite a good time socially. I ²⁰am also learning to drive.
*[University students ²¹get a refund if they take their tests here. I ²¹am looking forward to coming home next month.
See you soon.

At the dentist’s
I was on time for my dentist’s appointment, but the dentist was still busy with another patient, so I ¹sat in the waiting room and ²read some of the old magazines lying there. While I ³was wondering whether to leave and come back another day, I ⁴noticed a magazine article about teeth. It ⁵began: 'How long is it since you last ⁶went to the dentist? ⁷Do you go regularly every six months? Or ⁸have you put off your visit for the last six years?' Next to the article was a cartoon of a man in a dentist's chair. The dentist ⁹said: I’m afraid this ¹⁰will hurt; I ¹¹suddenly realised [BrE] that my tooth ¹²had stopped aching. But just as I ¹³was opening the door to leave, the dentist's door ¹⁴opened. 'Next please,' he ¹⁵called, as the previous patient ¹⁶was pushing past me. 'Actually, I'm not here to see you, I ¹⁷was waiting for my friend'; I ¹⁸shouted, leaving as rapidly as I could. ¹⁹Have you ever done this kind of thing? Surely, I can't be the only person who ²⁰hates the dentist!
Pozdrawiam,
Marcin
