Jest tak dlatego, że strefy roślinne są ściśle związane z klimatem na danym obszarze tworząc tzw. strefy klimatyczno-roślinne. A jak wiadomo jedynym strefowym czynnikiem decydującym o typie klimatu jest szerokość geograficzna. Właśnie przez to strefy klimatyczne i jednocześnie klimatyczno-roślinne są ułożone praktycznie równoleżnikowo.

Strefy roślinne ciągną się równoleżnikowymi pasami, ponieważ są zależne od stref klimatycznych występujących równolegle na Ziemi. Są one położone równolegle, ponieważ Ziemia jest w odniesieniu do Słońca nachylona i światło pada pod innym kątem. Dzięki temu jest inne natężenie światła i inne strefy klimatyczne.
